1. Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-vid.
A typical me-vid would probably be something half the audience would have to close their eyes for. I tend to gravitate towards the visceral, an expression of emotional character journeys and general D-R-A-M-A. If the vid makes ME feel, then that's the comfort zone. My comfort zone is forever trying to get my audience to feel the FEELS.

22. Have you ever deleted one of your published vids?
Never. Even though the early ones obv show some growing pains (I look at my Farscape vids and can easily spot when I didn't know how to zoom or punch into a clip myself so I had to use the show's own wide, medium, close up shots!), I still want to have a record of my progression. I think I made this rule by the second vid I ever posted; that I'd never delete them so I can learn from them. Also, to put things in perspective, a filmmaker never "deletes" their films once they're released, even if they get all the Razzies ever lol.

27. Do you accept prompts?
Ugh, I suppose the honest answer is that no, typically I don't accept prompts. :( Someone on tumblr once asked if I accepted commissions and I had a think about it and honestly, the price would have to be pretty high in order to translate the amount of work that goes into editing a vid. It's soooo time consuming that I have to be very married to the idea to even go to vidding the prompts my own brain generates! So perhaps the closest thing to accepting prompts is participating in Festivids. But even there you still try to maneuver yourself so you get to vid what you actuallu wanna vid. :P

2. Is there a genre or style you've yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
Ugh YES. Meet my nemesis, After Effects. I still have to get fluent in this sucker and yet, AND YET every time I sit down to try and learn something, I feel like I could be so much more productive actually vidding. alkjbaslkfblk! Endless spiral of hate and confusion. :(((

7. Point to a section from one of your favorite vids you've made and explain why you're proud of it.
Jfc, how am I supposed to answer this?! You can't pick a favorite child! (Yes you can..) I might have to do several, is that breaking the rules?

Art Bitch - Not only do I have strong Vividcon associations with this vid (first ever VVC and first ever partay on the dance floor/Club Vivid premiere!!) but mah girl, deej made all those AMAZING art pieces for the vid! And it was my first foray into thinking outside the box when it came to vidding so I love that it actually worked out!

Signed, The Doctor - The whole thing is my fav tbh. It's something I still can't quite believe that exists? I still remember dozing on the subway and being woken up by the pulsing of the song and just BAM I GOTTA VID THIS. And this is the only time I've vidded something so AU where it had a look, external source, original text and a complete original fannish story. And that ending still manages to rip me to shreds. SHREDS OF FEELS FOR THAT STUPID HANDY, UGH WHY! (I may have issues.)

Marble House - The last 45 seconds are a punch in the gut to either the audience or the Doctor, depending. My hatred levels escalate even still as I watch that smug bastard twirl! (Similarly, this vid reminds me of how good it felt to make Big Idea Vids, and I miss that feeling. :/)

Seven - This vid was edited over a weekend. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN AND WHY CAN'T MORE VIDS BE THIS WAY???! Fav moment is the bridge at 2:55 leading all the way to the Lynchian lady singers singing along with the song and turning into the screaming woman! Uuuggghhhh I honestly can't with that moment. *flaps arms*

Run Boy Run - The last minute or so basically destroys me. I love how visceral it is, and it's supposed to be like that, of course. It's supposed to be as blunt as the hand that smacks Cersei and the fist that punched Ros. And my favorite moment out of that entire section is that societal boundaries shatter when it comes to the lives of these women in that world and I cry and I cry oh how much do I cry. :'(

Myxomatosis - Fav moment (besides Vera Farmiga's face) is 2:07-2:45 where you REALLY get into Norman's head and see how things get so "mixed up" in there. Norman's dream particularly was fun to edit as it integrated the footage from Psycho to glimpse what srs shenanigans he's going to get up to. It was like his own prophetic dream.

Um, I really think I did this one wrong..

10. Is vidding your passion or just a fun hobby?
I've given waaay too much to this vidding thing for it to be anything BUT a passion. Sweat, blood and tears, man! Sweat, blood and tears. ILU, VIDDING. *whispers* and i haaaate you.

6. Share one of your weaknesses.
I'm not as fluent in After Effects as I need to be and that sucks balls. :/

12. What's the best vidding advice you've ever come across?
In one of those anon vidding memes ages ago obsessive24 flat out told me that in one particular vid of mine I used some effects in a section for no reason except to go with the beat and I was like PFFT, NO! And then I took another look and was like OH...yeah I did. So that really changed the way I looked at effects. (If only this advice was there for most of the YouTube vidding circle, amirite?)

26. Share three of your favorite vidders and why you like them so much.

So many vidders inspire me. SO MANY!

obsessive24 - I wanna say my first Nicky vid was Jesus for the Jugular? Maybe not, but that vid blew mah mind grapes. She was the first vidder I saw do things that I didn't know you could do with a vid. Use the source credits and promos to emphasize themes in your vid??? *GASP* WHAT MADNESS IS THIS?!?! And those zooms she does? Mmmmm. *touches self* She thinks story first and that's why she has inspired me for years.

bradcpu - I think the first Brad vid I saw was Living Dead Girl and it did EVERYTHING that a vid should do. And I fangirl this guy's vids bc I feel the thought process behind them. And the movement that he pulls off! I can't. So good!! I do believe that this year I drunkenly "I love you man"-ed him towards the end of Club Vivid...AND I MEAN IT.

kiki_miserychic - This lady does what I can't do which is make the vids that she wants to make whenever she wants to make them bc she's making them mainly for herself! I admire this SO MUCH. She's a true artist in that all her vids are in a particular Whitney Style and I love that. Keep doing your thing, girl! ♥

KEEP INSPIRING ME, Y'ALL!

5. Share one of your strengths.
Hmm. I wanna say I'm pretty good at finding vid songs. I actually love doing it. Bc your vid and your idea grows from that song, so it has to be perfect.

21. If you were to revise one of your older vids from start to finish, which would it be and why?
Funny you asked this one! Technically speaking, I have a rule where I specifically don't wanna remake any of the old ones bc I'm supposed to learn from them etc ,etc. BUT if I were to break that rule, I'd definitely go for (boulevard) of broken songs bc that's the one that has so much going for it, but also these GLARING MISTAKES that make me wanna shake myself by the shoulders all, "What were you thinking?!" (See previous answer to see what I mean ;)).

34. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?
Sure. If you put your stuff on YouTube and leave the comments enabled, you're definitely gonna get some crazy stuff. I've never gotten any that are super rude, but there have been hilarious confused ones and a person who was very mad that I had ads enabled on YT as if I was making money from the vid. Also another person who thought I tried to steal an artist's song and not credit him?? (Even though he's very specifically credited in the vid bc I always credit the source of my transformative work!) Also I've been pointed to some Russian forums that had posted some of my vids and were beng meh about them. I guess I don't impress Russian fanboys that much lol! You just shrug it off and keep doing your thing. I make my vids how I wanna make 'em, so if someone doesn't get my art, well that's the point of art isn't it? Your job is to put it out there and you do it knowing that someone somewhere out there WILL connect to it. :)

Okaaaaay.

2. Is there a genre or style you've yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
I want to do more experimental stuff that uses a lot of After Effects thingies and quotes and filters and all sorts of crazypants effects! Wait, am I trying to say I wanna make a YouTube vid?? D:

3. Is there a genre or style you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole?
YouTube vids.. (Bonus answer: boy slash!)

4. How many vid ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?
Like 20 or something?! Prolly more. IT'S ENDLESS UGH. My newest obsession is vidding Outlander to "Raspberry Swirl" by Tori Amos for Club Vivid.

19. How many times do you usually revise your vid before posting?
I revise as I go so it's difficult to say. But I have to be fully satisfied with it all before I even move to the color correcting phase, and that ALSO has to have a few passes before the vid is deemed done-zo. UGH VIDDING IS DIFFICULT AND ANNOYING WHY DO WE DO IT??? :(

31. Which is your favorite site for posting vids?
I suppose now it's YouTube, but really it's LJ back in 2009 bc that's when ppl commented legit things and you could have a discussion and there was an actual vidding community.

HEY THESE ARE THE SAME QUESTIONS YOU ASKED BRAD!

15. Do you work mostly from start to finish, or do you vid sections out of order?
I used to work linearly but then evolved to a non-linear workflow. At some point I must have gotten stumped at the beginning of a vid and just skipped to a part where I knew what to put and that became my method. It's sort of how they tell you to take tests. You're supposed to skip ahead to the questions you definitely know answers to first and then go back to fill in the ones you're not sure about and have to think on.

16. Do you use any tools, like clip notes or storyboards?
Once in a while I scribble down some notes. But mainly if it's quotes or something external that I need to add. Other than that, I storyboard the vid in my head. I listen to the vid song constantly until I have a clear picture of what the vid is, so that when I sit down to actually make it, I know what to put on the timeline. That's where the non-linear vidding is extra helpful, bc most of the time I still have some gaps to fill in my head!vid but other sections are just SO CLEAR. I can make them happen on the timeline and fill the gaps in later.

cortexiphan juice boxhollywoodgrrl on September 7th, 2014 07:15 pm (UTC)
8. Which vid was the hardest to make?
Long term projects and Big Picture vids are pretty hard to make just bc you may be dealing with a lot of pieces in terms of source etc. But I've found the vids that are hardest to make for me are the ones where I really have to enter the headspace of the subjects I'm portraying and be entranced in some of the heavy stuff within the text. So Smack My Bitch Up got to me when I was vidding it, but Run Boy Run was the most difficult vid probably as that was the most intense world to be submerged in. I remember sitting in a coffee shop during a particularly intense marathon edit session and doing nothing but killing those women and subjecting them to all sorts of horrible things. That REALLY weighed heavily on me at the end of the day. :/

9. Which vid was the easiest to make?
Seven! ohvienna and I made that thing in just a weekend and it was as if it was editing itself. Everything came together so easily, I still don't know how or why! And we love that vid!

24. Do you beta yourself? If so, what kind of beta are you?
I'm not sure if this question is asking if I am my own beta or if I beta other people's vids..Bc yes, I obviously beta my own work as I revise until things are as perfect as I deem them to be. I'm my own beta. But I do beta for other vidders as well. I'd like to think I'm alright at it? My rule as a beta is that I treat your vid as I would my own and try to get it to the best place it can be. That is first priority!

25. How do you feel about collaborations?
I love them and wish I could be a part of more of them! They're very difficult to achieve as you have to be compatible with the other vidder in terms of equipment and location. So the only collabs I've ever done were with the person I happen to live with. But if I could, I'd love to do more!

20. Choose a section from one of your earlier vids and talk about whether and how you'd do it differently now. (Person sending the ask is free to make suggestions).
Aw snap! This should be hilarious.

As already established in previous answers, I have some issues with the choices I made for some of the Rose sections in (boulevard of) broken songs. I'd re-cut it to get rid of the black and white effect that was there just to be there for no reason. It was very much originally there to just match the beat, but not do much else. Today I'd probably just alter the color slightly to differentiate btwn Rose pre-TARDISing and post. I'd also clean up the cutting a bit more, but still keep it disjointed.

So btw this is extra amusing to me that you asked this one bc, idk if you remember (I SURE DO) but you had such issues with this vid in the comments. Lolol!

Hee! No probs. Someone asked this one already so I'll just copy/pasta.

I can make them happen on the timeline and fill the gaps in later.

I strongly suggest the listening-to-the-song-on-repeat method. Having it be as full a vid in your head as possible is INCREDIBLY helpful imo. I honestly stop listening to new music when I'm in vidding mode.

Hope this helps! :)

13. What's the worst vidding advice you've ever come across?
I can't really think of anything. :/ Maybe a proposed censorship of what can be vidded for VVC..That discussion really disagreed with me.

14. If you only could vid one show/movie for the rest of your life, which show/movie would it be?
HA! I guess the most educated conclusion would have to be Game of Thrones! Simply bc there's SO MUCH SOURCE that you can spend infinite amounts of time exploring the world and not feel like you're retracing your steps. ;)

23. What do you look for in a beta?
I beta myself and I definitely kick my own ass while doing it. When I'm super stumped on a section of a vid, I tend to run it by my roomies and figure it out as we're talking it out. But when I wear the beta hat for others, I treat their vid like I would my own and try my best to get it where it needs to be. I think that's the best thing a beta can do, which is look to the vid fist and help it achieve its greatest potential.

32. Talk about your current vids in progress.
I'm working on a Hannibal vid that I wanted to premiere at VVC this year as a companion piece to my Bates vid. The two vids were supposed to premiere "Part 1: Norman" and "Part 2: Hannibal" as they explore the psychologies of a budding killer and an experienced one. Ideally they would have each played in both halves of Premieres, but alas, I couldn't finish both by the deadline. :'(
